What makes the Ausangate treks special?

The Ausangate treks, including those to Rainbow Mountain Peru, stand out because they traverse the sacred landscapes of Apu Ausangate, Cusco’s most revered peak. These trails guide you through quaint villages with alpaca herds, past magnificent glaciers, and beside high-altitude lakes, often with little to no other hikers in sight.

Rising to nearly 6400m, Ausangate is the tallest mountain in the Cusco region and holds deep spiritual significance in Andean culture. The 5-day trek kicks off about 100 km southeast of Cusco, starting at the trailhead in Tinki.

The  5-day Ausangate trek is a demanding high-altitude adventure, with numerous passes approaching 5000m. It also allows for a visit to the famous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. This journey is among the most scenic in the Andes, featuring sparkling lakes, towering peaks, and diverse wildlife, including llamas, alpacas, and the rare vicuña. If you’re lucky, you might also encounter the playful vizcacha, a relative of the chinchilla. One of the trek’s highlights is the chance to unwind in several natural hot springs along the route!
