Your Colca Canyon Trek begins with a day in Arequipa. We pick you up at the airport and then transfer you the 20-25 min to your hotel in Central Arequipa.
At 2 pm we will pick you up from your hotel to begin our afternoon Arequipa tour. First stop on our Arequipa tour is El Mirador de Carmen Alto, where you can appreciate a view of the lush Chilina Valley, followed by Yanahuara, an Arequipa suburb where you’ll see many structures of pearly white sillar volcanic rock. After this, we will head to the Monastery of Santa Catalina which dates from the 16th century and the Plaza de Armas, with its historic buildings and tree-lined central promenade. Lastly, we will visit the front of the massive Basilica Cathedral and the Church and cloisters of the Society of Jesus (Dome of San Ignacio).
Our Colca Canyon trek begins with a pick-up at your Arequipa hotel at 3am, driving approximately 4 hours via the town of Chivay (3633m / 11,919 ft) to our starting point in the Colca Valley, the Cruz Del Condor, where we will have the opportunity to see Andean condors in flight. We will then walk along the canyon edge for approximately 10 hours and a distance of 20km, enjoying the majestic sweeping landscapes of the canyon. We will finish our Colca Canyon trek arriving at the village of San Juan De Chucho where we’ll enjoy dinner before turning in at our hotel. This is a long, arduous day and should only be attempted by people who are short of time, and who are fit and healthy.
We will depart at around 7am, starting out walk through the old village of San Juan De Chucho and a number of small towns such as Coshñiua and Malata, dedicated to growing fruit and harvesting the cochineal insect for red dye. At the end of the afternoon we will arrive at Sangalle Oasis, where our camp on this Colca Canyon Trek will be based. You can have a relaxing soak at the natural hot springs pool located here.
We start out early at 4:30am and climb 3h to the village of Cabanaconde at the top of the Canyon ridge where we’ll have amazing views down into the Canyon itself. Afterwards, we will meet our transport and return to the village of Chivay, stopping at several panoramic viewpoints en route. If time allows, we can take the opportunity to visit the hot springs of La Calera and have a soak before lunch at Yanque.
After lunch, we will head back to Arequipa, departing Chivay at around 2pm and arriving around 6pm.
